Rail-to-Trail

The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) has prepared a draft Rail-to-Trail and Rail-with-Trail Facility Master Plan. Initial recommendations include developing a 44-mile rail trail from Clayton to Easton. This is one of many great opportunities to convert unutilized (or underutilized) rail beds into recreational facilities.

The New Castle Heritage Trail, which follows an abandoned rail right-of-way, was featured in the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy's quarterly magazine. We helped get this project going and hope to extend the trail north to provide bicyclists, walkers, joggers, roller-bladers and other enthusiasts with a four-mile pathway connecting Old New Castle to the Wilmington Riverfront. Imagine the possibilities!

In the photos to the right, you can see the dramatic improvements along the Heritage Trail in New Castle.
