Join Us and Find Your Next Outdoor Adventure!

Over the past year, while we have all been isolating ourselves from the COVID-19 pandemic, Delaware Greenways has been secretly cooking up a new website. The all-new design is tailored to help you plan your next adventure on our state’s trails and scenic byways – just in time to enjoy the fabulous spring weather.

The new site design features several new and enhanced capabilities for all our visitors:

  • Adventurer seekers will find an expanded library of trails and byways to make it easier to find your path to fitness, a scenic getaway, or family fun. Plus, interactive maps now offer directions to trailheads and parking lots.
  • Advocates of Delaware Greenways and its mission of creating and preserving our statewide network of trails and byways will find more ways to help us shape the future through creating and expanding these priceless resources.
  • Our partners and coalition members will find quick access to status and information on current and past projects.

FOR A LIMITED TIME! Join the Kick Off Scavenger Hunt

To kick off the release of the new website, we will be holding a scavenger hunt starting at 3:00 pm on April 13th, 2021. Visitors to our website can search for a set of icons hidden throughout the site. By collecting the entire set, you’ll be entered into a drawing for one of twenty-five official Delaware Greenways t-shirts.

Look for the “Join Our Scavenger Hunt” vertical yellow bar on the far right of page and start your hunt! The scavenger hunt will end on May 15th, 2021 at 11:59pm, so mark your calendars and tell your friends.

Can you find them all?

"Delaware Greenways' vision is to connect everyone to where they want to go. In addition to bringing the resources together to create and expand the trails and scenic corridors for our state, we are also committed to providing quick and easy access to the trail and byway library for the public. Our new website demonstrates our pledge to our community of adventurers, as well as our project partners."

Greetings,

I hope that when you saw “Message from the President” that you didn’t assume this was coming from another transplant Delawarean that assumed the title of president in January! As the newly elected president of Delaware Greenways’ Board of Directors, I am enthused to take an active role helping the organization move forward in accomplishing the goal to connect everyone to where they want to go.

There are lots of exciting things happening within Delaware Greenways and in Delaware in general. Just in time for Celebrate Trails Day on April 24th we have launched a new, redesigned website with the hopes that it will make the user experience all that much better, whether one is looking for new trails, pathways, or byways to explore or information about how to advocate for a future trail in Delaware. Check it out at www.delawaregreenways.org.

Additionally, the Delaware Bayshore Byway was just designated a National Scenic Byway, in no small part thanks to the work of Delaware Greenways. An official announcement of that designation will be made later this week, and a public celebration will be held this fall. Stay tuned on our website and Facebook page for that celebration date, once determined.

Looking into the future, Delaware Greenways has partnered and is collaborating with other great organizations to be part of the extensive Juneteenth events occurring throughout Delaware and virtually on and around June 19th. There will be self-guided rides, walks, drives and other events all honoring the historical significance of Delaware in the Underground Railroad. For more information about the events, and to see how you can get involved please check out our website in early May.

And finally, I am issuing a challenge to everyone using Delaware trails, pathways, and byways. Last May when we were all rookies at quarantining, my wife Hillary decided that she would break the monotony by challenging herself to what she called “Every Day in May.” During her challenge she ran at least a certain minimum distance every day in the month of May. This year, as we are now old pros at quarantining, I am issuing a Delaware Greenways “Every Day in May” challenge to you. To take part in the challenge you simply need to enjoy the beautiful May weather in Delaware by spending time on our wonderful trails, pathways, and byways every day that you can in the month. Each time you are out enjoying these places, we ask that you snap a photo and share it on social media using #degreenwaysmaychallenge or email info@delawaregreenways.org. Prizes will be awarded to three participants.

Get out there and enjoy Delaware!

Regards,

Jed Patterson

NDGT Wayfinding Plan seeks to improve trail experience and increase users

Delaware Greenways has been awarded a grant by REI Co-op which will provide funding for a Wayfinding* Project on the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail (NDGT). Needless to say, we’re super excited about it – and extremely grateful to REI for the support!

To date we have accomplished many parts that will help us complete the Plan:

  • Delaware Greenways’ volunteers have collected existing signage information for all signs on and around the trail.
  • From this work we have developed a database with the location and photo of each sign.
  • Maps have been created using this information, and they can be viewed on the NDGT Project Site.
  • Public survey completed in October 2021 to collect trail user and non-user experience on Delaware trails, with a main focus on the  NDGT.
  • Based on survey data and other information, we are currently compiling a list of improvements for signage and trail accessibility for the surrounding communities.

Check back here, or add your name to our mailing list to receive updates as they unfold.

*Wayfinding refers to information systems that guide people through a physical environment and enhance their understanding and experience of the space.

As a member-owned co-op, REI invests deeply in stewardship of the outdoor places its members know and love. REI actively works with nonprofits across the country to steward and maintain local trails and public lands and connect people to the outdoors. We are fortunate to have a great group of people serving on our Board of Directors to further our mission. Our Board generously contributes their time and treasure to provide the strategic focus and financial sustainability vital to achieving our mission. This group of advocates and ambassadors are just as comfortable discovering and enjoying the outdoors as they are at a conference table setting the organization’s direction.

Gary Linarducci, who has been on the Board for 6 years, will once again serve as President. Gary was involved with the development and roll out of our Strategic Plan, and has hit the ground running as our new leader. We’re charging into the next 30 years!

Ken Hilk, who made significant and positive impacts as President, retired from his position last month. The DGI team is extremely grateful for his guidance and insightful thinking, and as President Emeritus, we’ll continue to see Ken lend his support. Thank you Ken for all of your contributions!

In other officer news, Emily Schmidt, CPA, was elected as Treasurer at a recent meeting. She’s highly qualified, and with a passion for biking, completely in tune with our mission. We are also fortunate to have her chairing our Finance Committee! Thanks, Emily for sharing your expertise!
