Outside Magazine Places Wilmington on it's Happiest Towns List

“What constitutes a happy town? It comes down to things like ample outdoor access for all, affordability, a safe environment, diversity, and freedom for residents to be who they are.”

“This place prides itself on outsize access to the outdoors.” Yes we do!

In placing Wilmington in the “Happiest Places” category, Outside Magazine shares many of the great qualities that bring many to live within its borders and visit:

  • Walkability
  • Numerous recreation areas
  • LGBTQ+ community inclusivity
  • Celebration of music
  • Efforts to remove barriers to state park access
  • The city to city Jack A. Markell Trail
  • And, the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail!

That last item is the one that built our 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, as we built it.
An important undertaking, as the magazine points out:

“Residents have long valued greenspace. In the 1990s, Wilmingtonians fought development of a shopping mall and formed a coalition that worked for 25 years to build the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail; its 10.4 paved miles link numerous parks, playgrounds, historic estates, the Brandywine Zoo, museums, commercial zones, and schools.” Read the article.

Close to 35 years later, we continue to place our energy behind safe, accessible trails in Wilmington, and throughout Delaware. Projects include the Wilmington LoopNewport River and Commons Blvd Trails, East Coast Greenway in DESavannah RoadGeorgetown-Lewes Trail, and ones along the Delaware Bayshore Byway. All will have important impacts on the mental, physical, economical and environmental health of Delaware. We are proud to be helping to make all of Delaware a happier place to live in and visit!

Meetings Planned in Each of Delaware’s Three Counties

From State of Delaware News:

Balancing how to best protect our marine resources while considering the needs of people who use or make their livelihood in Delaware’s Bay and ocean waters is the goal of an ocean and bay plan being developed by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC).

To help develop the plan, DNREC is hosting three open house listening sessions to get feedback on how people use the ocean and bay, and to learn what is important to them.

“From our long-established fishing industry and commercial transport to tourism businesses to recreation and the emerging needs of clean energy, the Delaware Bay and ocean are key components of Delaware’s economy,” said DNREC Secretary Shawn M. Garvin. “At the same time, the ocean and bay are essential components of Delaware’s ecosystem that directly impact human well-being, from food security to public health. This plan will help us identify priorities and balance these sometimes competing interests.”

The listening sessions will take place in each of the three counties.

  • Wednesday, June 28, 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the Route 9 Library & Innovation Center, 3022 New Castle Ave., New Castle
  • Wednesday, July 12, 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes
  • Sunday, July 23, 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Dover Public Library, 35 Loockerman Plaza, Dover

A public workshop for the New Road Corridor Master Plan took place on Tuesday, November 27th.  Over 100 people in attendance were asked to help define the desired future character of New Road in the face of changing land use, flooding and drainage problems, non-motorized accessibility and recreational opportunities, and anticipated vehicular transportation projects along this well traveled road.  The planning effort is being led by Lardner/Klein Landscape Architects, PC and Delaware Greenways, Inc.   The presentation and the displays from the public meeting can be accessed at http://www.lardnerklein.com/new-road-corridor-master-plan.html.  Comments and suggestions received from the public are now being analyzed and from the comments a series of recommendations will be prepared for presentation to the public at future meetings.  Delaware Greenways supports the Historic Lewes Byway with funding provided by its membership and through donations from our friends.
