TIME: 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm
LOCATION:  Gilliam Building
77 Reads Way, New Castle 19720 (Google Maps

The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) will be hosting a public workshop to review semi-final plans for the East Coast Greenway, SR4 Shared-Use Path Project.

This workshop will be held in conjunction with the WILMAPCO’s Churchmans Crossing Area 2024 Public Workshop, another impactful project that includes improvements for bicycle and pedestrian travel.

“The East Coast Greenway, SR4 Shared-Use Path Project consists of the construction of a 10′ wide shared use pathway along SR4 from Augusta Drive to the Allendale Apartments, as well as several other traffic calming and bicycle/ pedestrian intersection crossing improvements, and improving walking and bicycling access to adjacent properties, roadways, and communities. The concept for this project was presented at an East Coast Greenway regional partners meeting in August of 2023. Since then, the project has worked through DelDOT’s plan review process and is currently at semi-final plans. At this workshop, DelDOT staff will present materials providing an overview of the project scope, as well as a copy of the semi-final plans for review and comment. ” – DelDOT

As a regional partner invested in completing the ECG in DE (learn more), Delaware Greenways encourages you to share your comments on the plan. You can do so in writing at the workshop, or mail them to DelDOT Community Relations, P.O. Box 778, Dover DE 19903, or send via email to dotpr@delaware.gos

Del DOT Applies for Funding to Add Impactful Miles to Riverwalk

Imagine the Wilmington Riverwalk extending past the city’s train station, around the 7th St. Peninsula, and on to the west bank of the Brandywine River. An extension that would increase the Wilmington Riverwalk from 1.3 miles to more than 3.5 miles.

Those added miles will connect individuals and communities to education, recreation, churches, jobs and other amenities. In 2018, the Wilmington Area Planning Council completed the 7th St. Peninsula Study to determine how limited bicycle/pedestrian (and vehicular) access to the area impacted economic growth and private investment. Read the study.

Delaware Greenways was thrilled to submit a letter of support for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Neighborhood Access and Equity Grant submitted by DelDOT.  For several years we have been advocating for this vital, safe, pedestrian and bicycle connection as the “East Side Connector”.  The Riverwalk Extension will connect City neighborhoods, the Peninsula, Northern Delaware Greenway Trail to the Jack A. Markell Trail and National Park sites.

These new miles would also complete a section of the Wilmington Loop Project, a 15+ mile pathway around the city and surrounding area that we’ve been working toward with community members and local agencies.

Our thanks to State Senator Darius J. Brown, DelDOT, Riverfront Development Corporation and all who have engaged in moving the Riverfront Extension Project forward. Its positive impact can’t be overstated!

Outside Magazine Places Wilmington on it's Happiest Towns List

“What constitutes a happy town? It comes down to things like ample outdoor access for all, affordability, a safe environment, diversity, and freedom for residents to be who they are.”

“This place prides itself on outsize access to the outdoors.” Yes we do!

In placing Wilmington in the “Happiest Places” category, Outside Magazine shares many of the great qualities that bring many to live within its borders and visit:

  • Walkability
  • Numerous recreation areas
  • LGBTQ+ community inclusivity
  • Celebration of music
  • Efforts to remove barriers to state park access
  • The city to city Jack A. Markell Trail
  • And, the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail!

That last item is the one that built our 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, as we built it.
An important undertaking, as the magazine points out:

“Residents have long valued greenspace. In the 1990s, Wilmingtonians fought development of a shopping mall and formed a coalition that worked for 25 years to build the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail; its 10.4 paved miles link numerous parks, playgrounds, historic estates, the Brandywine Zoo, museums, commercial zones, and schools.” Read the article.

Close to 35 years later, we continue to place our energy behind safe, accessible trails in Wilmington, and throughout Delaware. Projects include the Wilmington LoopNewport River and Commons Blvd Trails, East Coast Greenway in DESavannah RoadGeorgetown-Lewes Trail, and ones along the Delaware Bayshore Byway. All will have important impacts on the mental, physical, economical and environmental health of Delaware. We are proud to be helping to make all of Delaware a happier place to live in and visit!

Review and comment on the draft final Southbridge Transportation Action Plan

The Southbridge Transportation Action Plan is a community driven plan that focuses on reducing traffic speeds and truck traffic, improving conditions for people biking and walking, and enhancing bus connectivity in Southbridge. The community is located in southern Wilmington.

Southbridge has long been identified by the Wilmington Area Planning Council as one of our region’s Environmental Justice (EJ) neighborhoods.  Like other EJ areas, Southbridge warrants special attention to support equity in the transportation planning process.

The Draft Southbridge Transportation Action Plan is available for public comment through August 6, 2023. View the plan at http://www.wilmapco.org/southbridge.

Comments on the Plan should be sent to Bill Swiatek at bswiatek@wilmapco.org.

The deadline for comments is August 6, 2023.

  • $23 million to New Castle County Government for a shared-use path connecting Newport to the Jack A. Markell Trail in Wilmington. City of Wilmington Connector is Critical Remaining Link for Completion of Transformational Community Asset

Wilmington Loop Coalition
Date Posted: Thursday, July 6, 2023

The growing coalition of business, community and government leaders advocating for a continuous trail around and through the City of Wilmington heralded the announcement of federal funding for a new path that will connect the Town of Newport with the Jack A. Markell Trail in Wilmington.

The $23M grant to New Castle County enabling construction of an approximately 2-mile, ADA-accessible, shared-use trail from Newport to Wilmington makes possible the completion of a circular 16-mile path connecting jobs, schools, cultural institutions and state and national parks.

Advocates for the “Wilmington Loop” say plans for the Newport River Trail leaves a roughly 2.1-mile gap through the city’s East Side as a key critical link in completion of a transformational community thoroughfare for the state’s largest city and surrounding suburbs. This segment would connect the existing, hugely successful Brandywine and Christina River trails, creating a conduit for every neighborhood in and bordering the city to access resources and recreation safely and easily. (See red highlighted section in map on page 3 below and detailed Wilmington section map on page 4.)

“This is an exciting and important step in completion of the Loop,” said Scott Johnson, a businessman and leader of WiLCO – the Wilmington Loop Coalition. “A trail connecting East Side residents with the beauty, fun and practical value of the Brandywine and Christina trails is long overdue, and it is an essential missing link in a trail that will be a game changer for Delaware’s economy and quality of life, and we need to get it done.”

“The immense value of community trails here in Delaware and across the country – from an economic, environmental and public health standpoint – is clear, and we are delighted to see this funding for the Newport River Trail and thankful to our Congressional delegation, Gov. Carney and County Executive Meyer for their support,” said Mary Roth, executive director of Delaware Greenways. “We are looking forward to continuing to work with state and city leaders to make that critical connection a reality.”

“We often joke about how connected we all are and the limited degrees of separation in our city of 70,000 and state of one million,” said Logan S. Herring, Sr., CEO of the WRK Group. “However, these blurred lines come into focus as it pertains to access and opportunity, and I see these barriers clearly everyday working in Riverside and Northeast Wilmington – barriers to jobs, education, and community resources. By connecting the Wilmington Loop through the city, we can help make the promise of true community connectivity a reality.”

“The city is pleased to be part of a wonderful project being led by the Wilmington Loop Coalition,” said Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki. “This initiative has picked up encouraging momentum and the city supports the effort to create numerous outdoor recreational opportunities to explore our great city as well as beautiful neighboring environs. Congratulations to all who see the tremendous value in the completion of the Loop.”
