Working with the City of New Castle, Delaware Greenways launched the City’s Community Wellness Initiative in early 2011. A grant through the State’s Division of Public Health enabled the community to assess current conditions in the community that likely influence community member health and develop a Wellness Plan that will guide the City and other sectors within the community, such as schools, to change policies and environmental conditions to facilitate healthy lifestyles.

With involvement from local schools, work sites, health care locations, other local organizations, and residents, the New Castle Community Wellness Plan is complete and progress is already being made toward many goals:

  • The City of New Castle, working with Delaware Greenways, enacted a smoke-free parks and playgrounds ordinance in August 2011. Public art, in the form of sculptures created by students and local volunteers, have been installed to remind people about the smoke-free policy. For more information: Smoke-Free Places in Delaware
