Where is this Trail?

This popular and easy biking, hiking, running, and bird watching trail traverses the salt marshes of Cape Henlopen State Park in coastal Delaware.  Visit Cape Henlopen State Park’s website for information on park amenities.

  • A little over 5 miles this out and back trail connects the resort towns of Lewes and Rehoboth. The trail skirts the western side of Gordons Pond, a 900-acre saltwater lagoon and offers some of the most stunning views you’ll find in the area.
  • Northern access begins at Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes at the Herring Point parking area (park entrance fees apply). Southern end of the trail begins at the Gordon Pond parking area in Rehoboth Beach.
  • The finely crushed gravel trail includes an elevated boardwalk with two scenic overlooks. Closer to the southern end outside of Rehoboth you’ll find an overlook onto to the lagoon where a wide variety of waterfowl can be found on most days.  Gordons Pond is one of only four places in North America considered a migration super highway for waterfowl.  The wildlife area of Gordons Pond is nearly 5,200 acres of breathtaking views, with the Great Dune rising 80’ above sea level.
  • The trail is narrow in many places including the elevated boardwalk section. Remember to be a safe and respectful trail user. If you’re passing someone on your bike, use your bell and call out well in advance.  If you’re looking for a quick ride – consider another route.  With its beautiful sights and wildlife sounds, this trail is meant to be savored and enjoyed.

Cape Henlopen State Park Bike Loop

3.3 paved miles traverse through this scenic park.  More rustic trails within the Cape Henlopen State Park provide opportunities to explore.

Fort Miles

Cape Henlopen State Park is home to the Fort Miles Historical Area, a former World War II military base that was a key piece of our nation’s coastal defense from World War II through the early 1970’s. Today, Fort Miles is home to the Fort Miles Museum, encompassing a gun battery, six barracks buildings, a fire control tower, an orientation building, and an artillery park. It’s a special place for history enthusiasts, veterans, families, or anyone interested in learning about Delaware stories, Delaware heroes, and Delaware’s role in WWII.  Take a guided tour, enjoy an interpretive program, visit the art gallery, take in a special event, and celebrate “The Greatest Generation.”

Rehoboth Beach

At the conclusion of the trail in Rehoboth travel south on Ocean Avenue to Surf.  Turn left on Surf Avenue and follow to the boardwalk and downtown Rehoboth Beach
