On Saturday, June 13th, 38 riders gathered for the Delaware Freedom Ride, traveling the Jack A. Markell Trail as it connected them to Delaware’s history, communities, and the stories that shaped our nation.
Along the route, participants heard inspiring stories of courageous abolitionists, Underground Railroad stationmasters, and pivotal moments that shaped our nation’s history, while also reflecting on events connected to America’s 250th anniversary.
Outside the New Castle Court House Museum, Michael Connolly, Executive Director of the New Castle Historical Society, recounted the 1848 trial of Thomas Garrett and John Hunn, who were prosecuted for helping an enslaved family escape to freedom. With Historic New Castle preparing for Separation Day festivities, he also explained the significance of Delaware’s first step toward statehood.
Beneath the shadow of I-295, Dr. Kathy Dettwyler, an anthropologist, introduced riders to Historic Farnhurst Cemetery, a Potter’s Field from 1885-1933. Recently, Civil War soldiers and members of the United States Colored Troops have been discovered buried here and are now documented in cemetery records.
At the Delaware Greenways-designed information kiosk overlooking the Christina River pedestrian bridge, DG staff member Terri Jones spoke about how trails connect us not only to the outdoors, but also to the people, places, and stories that have shaped our communities.
At Dravo Plaza along Wilmington’s Riverwalk, DG Board Member Damali Thomas shared the story of Harry Craig, a free Black Underground Railroad operative who helped move freedom seekers and vital information through Wilmington’s clandestine network.
After completing the ride, participants had the opportunity to continue the day’s celebration by attending either Wilmington’s Juneteenth Parade and Festival at Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park or Separation Day festivities in Historic New Castle.
Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to our partner, Urban Bike Project, for helping make this year’s Freedom Ride such a success. We look forward to creating more opportunities to explore Delaware, connect with one another, and discover the stories that make our communities unique.
