Honoring Delaware’s Freedom Seekers

Honoring Delaware's Freedom Seekers: The Juneteenth Celebration Route

Delaware Greenways invites you to experience the “Juneteenth Celebration Route”. Traveling from the Old New Castle Courthouse to Wilmington’s Tubman-Garrett Park on the Jack A. Markell Trail, this virtual experience enables you to walk, run, or bike in the company of eight important Delawareans who fought for freedom.

The story map below, Honoring Delaware’s Freedom Seekers, details the route of these men and women, and tells the story of their remarkable physical, emotional, and intellectual journeys.

You can experience the Juneteenth Celebration Route in person by viewing the story map on your cell phone, or without traveling its distance, on your home computer. Invite friends to join you or take it in alone.  It’s a powerful story that deserves to be heard and celebrated.

We hope you’ll travel the route in whichever way you can.

In June 2021, Delaware Greenways and Urban Bike Project, held the first Delaware Freedom Ride, joining folks together to travel the Juneteenth Celebration Route and learn about Delaware’s Freedom Seekers along the way. This year the ride is scheduled for Saturday, June 17th. We hope you’ll join us on this moving and inspirational ride.  Go to the event page for more details!
