Inaugural Freedom Ride

Honoring Delaware's Freedom Seekers

On Juneteenth, Delaware Greenways and Urban Bike Project of Wilmington, brought together a group of awesome people; friends, families, community partners, for a 15 mile bike ride to honor Delaware’s Freedom Seekers who courageously fought for freedom and justice. 
 
Our route was the Jack A. Markell Trail whose miles in between Historic New Castle and the City of Wilmington, are dense with stories of heroic actions by slaves, and those that sought to help free them. With stops along the trail, a few of those tragic and inspirational stories were shared, and can be continued to be heard today…  We have created the Honoring Delaware’s Freedom Seekers Story Map with its Celebration Route, so that you can learn about the journey of these slaves.
 
We were thrilled to have the Bicycle Nomad, Erick Cedeno as the Freedom Ride’s Marshal. In front of the New Castle Courthouse, Erick shared stories of his experience bicycling the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad from Las Vegas to Niagara Falls.
 
Thank you to everyone who came out for the ride. It truly was a special morning being with you all!
