Message From The President

Greetings,

I hope that when you saw “Message from the President” that you didn’t assume this was coming from another transplant Delawarean that assumed the title of president in January! As the newly elected president of Delaware Greenways’ Board of Directors, I am enthused to take an active role helping the organization move forward in accomplishing the goal to connect everyone to where they want to go.

There are lots of exciting things happening within Delaware Greenways and in Delaware in general. Just in time for Celebrate Trails Day on April 24th we have launched a new, redesigned website with the hopes that it will make the user experience all that much better, whether one is looking for new trails, pathways, or byways to explore or information about how to advocate for a future trail in Delaware. Check it out at www.delawaregreenways.org.

Additionally, the Delaware Bayshore Byway was just designated a National Scenic Byway, in no small part thanks to the work of Delaware Greenways. An official announcement of that designation will be made later this week, and a public celebration will be held this fall. Stay tuned on our website and Facebook page for that celebration date, once determined.

Looking into the future, Delaware Greenways has partnered and is collaborating with other great organizations to be part of the extensive Juneteenth events occurring throughout Delaware and virtually on and around June 19th. There will be self-guided rides, walks, drives and other events all honoring the historical significance of Delaware in the Underground Railroad. For more information about the events, and to see how you can get involved please check out our website in early May.

And finally, I am issuing a challenge to everyone using Delaware trails, pathways, and byways. Last May when we were all rookies at quarantining, my wife Hillary decided that she would break the monotony by challenging herself to what she called “Every Day in May.” During her challenge she ran at least a certain minimum distance every day in the month of May. This year, as we are now old pros at quarantining, I am issuing a Delaware Greenways “Every Day in May” challenge to you. To take part in the challenge you simply need to enjoy the beautiful May weather in Delaware by spending time on our wonderful trails, pathways, and byways every day that you can in the month. Each time you are out enjoying these places, we ask that you snap a photo and share it on social media using #degreenwaysmaychallenge or email info@delawaregreenways.org. Prizes will be awarded to three participants.

Get out there and enjoy Delaware!

Regards,

Jed Patterson
