For years, the trail development process has been the responsibility of state government. Delaware Greenways is bringing a new dynamic to trail development: We create coalitions of government agencies, private companies, non-profit organization, and foundations to accelerate and extend trail development.
A new trail idea comes to light from community, government, professionals.
Our role:
Advocate for a new trail to be included in government plans and identify a trail “owner.”
Funds are raised for a planning study to determine cost, feasibility, and public support.
Our role:
Raise or advocate for funding for the planning study to come from the government or private sources.
Planning study takes place, resulting in an implementation plan and project timetable.
Our role:
Either lead the study or act as a key stakeholder if it is decided the government leads the study.
Funds are raised for right of way, engineering, and construction. Project is prioritized.
Our role:
Raise funds from private sources to match government funds, advocate for the project with agencies.
Engineering designs and right of way plans are prepared and right of way is acquired.
Our role:
Assist with project outreach and gathering community input; serve as a stakeholder at design meetings.
In this phase the design project is constructed.
Our role:
Generate interest on the trail among the public, local communities and user groups.
About Delaware Greenways:
