Delaware Awarded $44 Million RAISE Grant for Trail Development
Delaware is receiving RAISE grants to support trail improvements that are pivotal for outdoor connections in New Castle and Sussex Counties!
DATE: Tuesday, November 12th
TIME: 6:30pm -7:30pm
LOCATION: Minquas Fire Company, 21 N. James Street, Newport, DE 19804 (Google Maps)
Attend this public meeting, held by the New Castle County Department of Public Works – Division of Parks, to learn about the status of the highly anticipated Newport River Trail.
The meeting will be held in-person and will include a presentation by project consultants Whitman Requardt & Associates, Inc. on the current design, permitting status, and an opportunity for residents and businesses to provide feedback.
As part of New Castle County’s Connecting Communities Initiative, the County is proposing a 2-mile paved trail as a key connection between the Town of Newport and the Jack A. Markell (JAM) Trail. The trail would run along the north bank of the Christina River from South James Street to the JAM Trail, provide a low-stress alternative for bicyclists and pedestrians traveling to and from Newport and Wilmington, and offer important safety, health, and economic benefits to County residents. The trail also extends connectivity to the proposed Wilmington Loop and to the multi-state East Coast Greenway trail system.
*** Since the last public meeting held in May 2023, the Newport River Trail has been awarded a $23 million RAISE Grant by the US Department of Transportation for project construction. ***
