Wilmington Riverwalk Extension Project Proposal
The Riverwalk Extension will connect city neighborhoods, the 7th St. Peninsula, NDGT to JAM Trail and National Park sites.
Length: 2.3 mi
Surface: Paved
Difficulty: Easy
The creation of the Newport River Trail will grow Delaware’s trail network for both recreation and transportation use. The connections will provide access to parks, open space, river viewsheds and wildlife areas. In addition, the trail will provide safe, protected transportation access to three major cities in New Castle County. Read further details on the Newport River Trail.
The trail connection will also contribute to the mission of the Alliance for Watershed Education “…to collectively increase and enhance constituent appreciation, knowledge, and stewardship of the Delaware River watershed.” Read more.

Key Connections:
The Newport Transportation Plan has been approved. The recommendations of the Plan can be viewed on Wilmington Area Planning Council’s (WILMAPCO) interactive map. If you wish to view the report and appendices separately, or require a smaller file size, visit their website.
Newport Transportation Study Public Workshops were held beginning in 2020, which provided a review of planning analysis and challenges, and gave members of the community time to voice their opinions and experiences for the Plan. The most recent Public Workshop was held on November 12, 2024 in order to provide updates on the project and receive feedback on the proposed design. View details of the workshop:
