Delaware Awarded $44 Million RAISE Grant for Trail Development
Delaware is receiving RAISE grants to support trail improvements that are pivotal for outdoor connections in New Castle and Sussex Counties!
Home » Wilmington Riverwalk Extension Project Proposal
Imagine the Wilmington Riverwalk extending past the city’s train station, around the 7th St. Peninsula, and on to the west bank of the Brandywine River. An extension that would increase the Wilmington Riverwalk from 1.3 miles to more than 3.5 miles.
Those added miles will connect individuals and communities to education, recreation, churches, jobs and other amenities. In 2018, the Wilmington Area Planning Council completed the 7th St. Peninsula Study to determine how limited bicycle/pedestrian (and vehicular) access to the area impacted economic growth and private investment. Read the study.
Delaware Greenways was thrilled to submit a letter of support for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Neighborhood Access and Equity Grant submitted by DelDOT. For several years we have been advocating for this vital, safe, pedestrian and bicycle connection as the “East Side Connector”. The Riverwalk Extension will connect City neighborhoods, the Peninsula, Northern Delaware Greenway Trail to the Jack A. Markell Trail and National Park sites.
These new miles would also complete a section of the Wilmington Loop Project, a 15+ mile pathway around the city and surrounding area that we’ve been working toward with community members and local agencies.
Our thanks to State Senator Darius J. Brown, DelDOT, Riverfront Development Corporation and all who have engaged in moving the Riverfront Extension Project forward. Its positive impact can’t be overstated!
